Mary Pauline Hannsen, 91, department store manager

Mary Pauline Hannsen, a retired department store manager, died of a stroke Thursday at a nursing home in Saline, Mich. The former Catonsville resident was 91.

Born Mary Pauline Bell in Pittsburgh, she was raised in Baltimore and graduated in 1932 from Forest Park High School. In the 1950s, she was a Girl Scout troop leader at First English Lutheran Church on North Charles Street, where she was also a member. She was also a volunteer seamstress for several amateur dance companies.

After raising her family, Mrs. Hannsen became manager of the boys department at the old Hutzler's Westview department store from 1965 until retiring in 1980.

Her husband of 59 years, John Edward Hannsen, a Montgomery Ward salesman, died in 1995.

Services were held Sunday in Michigan.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Seward of Saline; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. A son, John Charles Hannsen, died in 1982.
