Tip of the Week: Performance-based rewards

The first step is to determine what performance is to be measured, how it will be measured and over what amount of time the measurement will take place. This must be clearly communicated to all participants so that a level of expected performance is understood.

The second step is to determine appropriate rewards for achieving the goals. Typically, the management group decides on rewards. Form focus groups of employees and determine what the participants feel are appropriate rewards.

Third, determine whether the organization can afford the program.

Fourth, develop a plan to explain the effort and have the legal department review it.

Fifth, conduct focus groups with employees to determine what they see as positive and whether they have concerns.

Sixth, present the plan to senior management for approval.

Seventh, develop a communications and training program so that everyone understands how the plan works.

Eighth, introduce the plan to employees and follow up after about six months with a survey for feedback.
