THE QUESTION: WHEN IS COLUMBIA'S BIRTHDAY?

The planned community turns 38 this year, with a celebration scheduled for June 17 at the Columbia downtown lakefront, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., with cake and entertainment. The town's official dedication ceremony was held June 21, 1967, at Wilde Lake. According to Better Places, Better Lives, the biography of Columbia founder James W. Rouse by Joshua Olsen, during that first celebration, "someone forced Jim into a suit, although nobody could keep his fringe of hair in place, so it protruded at an odd angle all through the ceremony."
