Certificate ceremonies schedule announced

Carroll County public schools have announced the schedule for certificate ceremonies as follows:

Tomorrow: 7 p.m., Carroll Springs School graduation at the school, 495 S. Center St., Westminster.

Tuesday: 7 p.m., Gateway School certificate ceremony at the school, 225 Kate Wagner Road, Westminster.

June 17: 7:30 p.m., Adult Education graduation recognition at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road.

Information sessions set for diploma program

Carroll County's public school system offers the External Diploma Program, a self-paced alternative to the GED test.

Information sessions on the program will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Student Support Services/Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 55 N. Court St., Suite G27, Westminster.

Adults seeking diploma invited to `First Steps'

Adults aged 16 and older who want to learn about high school diploma options and other programs, and have their math and reading skills evaluated, can attend a "First Steps" orientation.

Introductory programs will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon June 27 at Business and Employment Resource Center, 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

School system offers GED, practice tests

Carroll County's school system offers monthly GED tests and practice sessions for the exam to those who wish to earn their high school diploma.

To take the test, individuals must be 16 or older, have been a state resident for at least 90 days, have been withdrawn from school for at least 90 days and pay a test fee.

It is recommended that individuals take the practice test before taking the exam.

A practice test will be given from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18 at Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 224 N. Center St., Room 101, Westminster.

The next two-part test will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 14 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 16 at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road.

Boating safety course aimed at middle-schoolers

The outdoor education office of Carroll County Public Schools will sponsor a summer course on Maryland Basic Boating Safety for middle school pupils.

Requirements for certification will be attendance; reading of the text, Maryland Basic Boating Course; and a passing score of 70 percent or better on a multiple-choice test.

The course includes practice on the pond and pool at Bear Branch Nature Center and a canoe trip on the lake at Piney Run Park.

Two sessions will be offered: Session I, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Session II, from noon to 3 p.m., June 20-24.

The cost is $40.

City on the Hill offers teen leadership training

The Association of Maryland Families will bring City on the Hill to Annapolis on July 11-15 for high school students 14 to 18 years old.

City on the Hill is a youth leadership conference with a curriculum of civic, academic and moral instruction. Youths participate in training to learn how government works and to be leaders. They will meet legislators, lobbyists, lawyers and educators.

The cost is $325, which includes a $75 nonrefundable application fee. All meals, program materials, housing and transportation are included. Students and chaperones will be lodged in dormitories on the College of Notre Dame's campus in Baltimore. Limited scholarships are available.

College's Greece trip open to the public

Carroll Community College invites the public to join students, faculty, family and friends on a trip to Greece during spring break 2006.

The nine-day trip includes round-trip air fare, seven overnight hotel stays, daily breakfast and dinner, a bilingual tour director and sightseeing with local guides. Highlights of the trip include the Acropolis, the Agora site and Athenian cemetery, Delphi site and Olympia.

The cost for travelers age 25 and younger is $1,842, and for those over age 25 is $2,132. This program fee is valid through Aug. 31.

Students taking the trip are eligible for course credit in three subjects and for honors credit.

High school graduation schedules

Ceremonies for each of the county's seven high schools will be held in Gill Gym at McDaniel College, Westminster. Two sign-language interpreters for hearing-impaired people will be provided and a special area, in the first few rows and to the right of the stage, will be designated for people requiring those services.
