Bay Bridge peak-hour backups expected this weekend

June 04, 2005|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Motorists could face heavy traffic and backups on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at peak travel hours this weekend, in part because of scheduled events, the Maryland Transportation Authority warned yesterday.

The authority said that drivers could run into eastbound congestion today about 10 a.m., when 1,000 motorcyclists are expected to take part in their annual Ride Across Maryland.

The agency also expects heavy westbound traffic Sunday as travelers return from the Eastern Shore and Dover International Speedway.

Travelers can call 1-877- BAYSPAN for a report on traffic conditions on the bridge.

The authority is advising motorists to avoid congestion by traveling in off-peak hours.

The authority said that traffic is generally lighter between 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, between 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday and after 8 p.m. Sunday.
