House, Garden Pilgrimage is Saturday

Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute Inc. will sponsor the Howard County portion of the 68th Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage, with stops at elegant homes and picturesque streets, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

A picnic, accompanied by music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Colonial America, will be held in Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park. The cost is $10. Tickets for the tour are $25.

Reservations are not required for the self-timed driving tour. Tickets, which can be purchased on the day of the tour, are needed to enter the homes and gardens.

Proceeds will help build a Victorian arbor on the grounds of Patapsco Female Institute.

B&O museum to mark anniversary of VE Day

The Ellicott City B&O Railroad Station Museum will mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day from noon to 5 p.m. May 8. Historians, re-enactors and displays of equipment will help mark the surrender of Germany during World War II.

Historian John Jeffries will speak at 2 p.m. about World War II and how it transformed the United States.

Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for students and senior citizens. Children to age 13 pay $3. Those to age 2 are admitted free.

Mystery Book Club to meet at library

The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will hold a meeting of its Mystery Book Club at noon May 10.

The group will discuss Hotshots: A Neil Hamel Mystery, by Judith Van Gieson. Participants are invited to take a sandwich; drinks and dessert will be provided. Books are available at the branch.

Store in Ellicott City holding grand opening

Rita's -- Ices, Cones, Shakes and Other Cool Stuff, 9095 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will celebrate the store's grand opening tomorrow through May 12 with a series of promotions.

The store is owned by Erik Lipton.

Free T-shirts will be given to the first 30 customers from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow and May 9. Tuesdays are "Kid's Night," with goody bags and free Italian ices for children to age 13.
