Secessionists meet in Clarksville

April 22, 2005

An account in The Sun on April 23, 1861, detailed a meeting of citizens in Clarksville dedicated to joining the Confederate cause. A homemade flag of secession was unfurled and raised on a 30-foot pole "amid the cheering of the multitude."

"After which a company of cavalry was formed and able-bodied farmers enrolled themselves and elected ...officers.

"Strong secession and resistance speeches were delivered. ... There are no Union men to be found in Howard County now; their late leaders are the most active in the secession cause."
