April 21, 2005

John A. Shaw, a retired Social Security Administration official, died of cancer Monday at his Columbia home. He was 78.

Born in Detroit, he served in the Army at the end of World War II and earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Detroit.

He joined the federal agency in Detroit before moving to Baltimore nearly 43 years ago, working initially at the downtown Candler Building. He was among the first employees to move to Social Security's Woodlawn headquarters, where he was an administrator who helped draft legislation. He retired nearly 15 years ago.

He then assisted three of his sons - Mark Shaw of Columbia, Michael Shaw of Westminster and Patrick Shaw of Eldersburg - in their landscaping business, DL&LS Inc. He also helped his fourth son, David Shaw, run an organic vegetable farm near Columbia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon tomorrow at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia, where he was a member.

Survivors also include his wife of 52 years, the former Dorothy L. Hyslop; a daughter, Susan Ongert of Columbia; and nine grandchildren.
