South County center announces May events

South County Senior Center will offer the following programs next month:

May 3, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Garden Club visit to the South County Community Gardens greenhouse. Bring lunch, wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. In case of heavy rain, trip will be postponed. Registration.

May 4, 10 a.m., Cpl. Joe Hatcher of the Police Department will talk about protecting your car.

May 4, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Cinquo de Mayo Party with salsa and tortilla chips, merengue dancing, and alcohol-free margaritas.

May 6, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Mother's Day Tea.

May 9, 12:30 p.m., diabetes group will hear a representative from Bayer Health discuss "Know Your Health Steps."

May 10, 11 a.m., a demonstration on making artificial flowers will be offered to the Garden Club by Frans Scheefhals.

May 10, 17 and 24, a three-session class, "Caregiver 101," will discuss coping skills and care options. Registration. 410-222-4464.

May 11, 10 a.m., Wanda Nason Raleigh, director of the county adult public guardianship program, will discuss living wills and designation of a health care power of attorney.

May 11, 1 p.m., Heritage Harbor Chorus will present an afternoon of music.

May 12, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., learn to knit a Boucle hat. Registrants will receive a supply list at sign-up. Open to beginners and experienced knitters.

May 17, 10 a.m., discussion on perennial varieties and garden ideas for the Garden Club with Mark from River Bend Wholesale Nursery.

May 18, 12:30 p.m., movie and popcorn.

May 20, 1 p.m., partners 9 ball pool tournament. Registration.

May 25, 1 p.m., karaoke music show.

Arnold Senior Center schedules May attractions

Arnold Senior Center will offer the following events next month:

May 2, 10 a.m., the center's Red Hat Rubies will meet. Refreshments will be served.

May 2, 9, 16 and 23, 12:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekly Scrabble tournament. All are welcome.

May 4, noon to 2 p.m., celebrate Cinquo de Mayo with a special luncheon featuring chicken enchiladas, Mexican rice, black beans, chips and salsa and beverages. Sign up by April 27.

May 5, 12, 19, 26, and June 2 and 9, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., class on terrorism and counter-terrorism. Covers the domestic, political and social aspects, the role of the media, as well as the terrorist groups and government agencies that combat them. Registration by May 3.

May 5, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., dedication of a table tennis table in memory of Reg Quilter, an avid player. A table tennis workshop and demonstration will follow the dedication.

May 6, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., blood-pressure screenings.

May 6, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., program on the history of Mother's Day. Sign up by May 4.

May 9, 12:30 p.m., ice cream social featuring ice cream sundaes with toppings. Sign up by May 5.

May 11, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Covenant Players will present an original play for the center. Sign up by May 9.

May 12, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Severna Park Bums will present a variety show.

May 13, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Retired Teachers' Chorus with an afternoon of musical fun.

May 13, Freaky Friday the 13th. Be nutty, wear outlandish clothes and have a good time.

May 16, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the Pascal Go-Getters present a variety show.

May 17, 9:15 a.m., Advisory Council meeting, all are welcome to attend.

May 18, 9:30 a.m. to noon, 10-minute back, neck and hand mini-massages. Free, first-come, first-served.

May 18, 1 p.m., members and staff model the latest spring fashions in the Mother's Day Fashion Show. Sign up by May 16.

May 19, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., van trip to the Amish Market. Sign up by May 12.

May 23, noon, Italian Day featuring pasta dishes for lunch. Sign up by May 19.

May 24, 10 a.m., discussion on advance medical directives and living wills. Sign up by May 23.

May 25, 10 a.m. to noon, an American Heart Association instructor will teach participants how to perform the Heimlich maneuver and CPR, and learn about the automated external defibrillator. Sign up by May 23.

May 25, 1 p.m., Happy Birthday! Celebrate May birthdays.

May 26, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Cameo Club Variety Show, featuring former contestants in the Ms. Senior Maryland Pageant.

May 30, Memorial Day. Center closed.

May 31, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Book Club meets. New members welcome.
