Organic food co-op: dream that's come true, naturally

April 20, 2005|By Stephanie Shapiro | Stephanie Shapiro,SUN STAFF

The Village enables patrons to "take an active role in making food decisions" and to become knowledgeable about nutrition, food production and other food-related subjects, she says. "You don't get that from a Safeway."

One day, Heilman, also a member of Baltimore's experimental music community, plans for the co-op to purchase its own space, where members will establish a holistic community center to offer cooperative child care, yoga classes, health care and other services as well as healthful foodstuffs.

Since the co-op's conception, Heilman has been gratified by the efforts of those who share her vision. Her tone is not at all sardonic when she says that the process of opening the Village has "restored my faith in humanity."
