THE QUESTION: WHAT IS CARROLL COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S CIRCULATION PER YEAR?

The county's five public library branches -- Westminster, Eldersburg, Taneytown, North Carroll and Mount Airy -- circulated 3,583,119 items last year, according to Ann Wisner, the system's external relations manager.

Last year marked the 12th straight year that Carroll's public library system ranked first among Maryland libraries in circulation per capita.

The system has 552,786 holdings, which includes nonprint items such as videos and digital video discs.

A sixth branch, in Finksburg, is in the planning stages and is expected to open in 2007. The $4.9 million branch will open with about 30,000 holdings.
