Savage Historical Society plans to meet

The Savage Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Faith & Ministry Center, 9032 Baltimore St., Savage.

The theme will be "Savage Ball Teams." The program will include videos of former teams and games donated by former Savage resident Leigh Hackley. A photo of the Santa Heim Softball Team will be on display. Savage residents are invited to share their memories.

The society's officers, who will serve for three years, will be elected. Louise Thornton, chair of the Nominations Committee, has submitted a slate of nominees: the Rev. Galen R. Menne, president; Carolyn Adami, vice president; Helen Rushing, secretary-treasurer. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor.

Everyone is welcome, although only members can vote.

Pre-teens, parents to talk about alcohol, drugs

The Southeast Horizon Council and Savage branch library will sponsor a dinner and workshop, "Beyond SAFE: Pre-teens and parents talk about alcohol and other drugs," from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Anne Walker, substance abuse prevention coordinator for the Howard County Health Department, will lead the discussion. The workshop is designed to help children and their parents develop skills to work together to prevent substance abuse.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The program, which will include joint and separate sessions for students and parents, starts at 7 p.m.

A workshop on "Crushes, Going Out and Pressures to be `Sexy': Parents and Pre-Teens Talk," is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 3 at the library. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.

Peggy Schultz, a pupil personnel worker for the Howard County schools, and Laura Smit, director of HC DrugFree and coordinator of the Howard County Coalition for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, will facilitate the discussion.

Admission to both programs is free, but reservations are required. The library is at 9525 Durness Lane.

Basket bingo scheduled Saturday at fire hall

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Savage Volunteer Fire Company will hold a basket bingo Saturday at the fire hall, 8925 Lincoln St., Savage.

Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. Games start at 7 p.m.

Spring classes: South Laurel Recreation Council is accepting registration for spring classes for children, teens and adults. Classes are held at Montpelier, Oaklands and James H. Harrison elementary schools. Fitness, self-defense, dance, crafts, chess, magic, sewing and a variety of other classes are offered. 301-776-2805.

Checkers: The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, is offering a Checkers Club for ages 11 and older from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday. No experience is necessary. 410-880-5975.

Writing romance: Maryland romance writers Michelle Monkou, Catherine Asaro and Ruth Glick (who writes as Rebecca York) will talk about writing and romance at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Savage branch library.
