WHITE MARSH -- Beginning May 1, The Avenue at White Marsh will introduce a youth escort policy that requires children 15 years old and under to be escorted by an adult at night, officials said.

The shopping center said it is starting the program to help keep children safe. Extra security and off-duty police officers will be on hand to explain the policy when it goes into effect next month.

Young people won't be allowed in public areas like the fountain plaza, sidewalks and parking lots after 9 p.m. without the supervision of a parent or guardian who is at least 21 years old. Parents are urged to keep children in sight at all times.

Children will be allowed in stores with extended hours like Barnes & Noble after 9 p.m. if they proceed directly to and from the venue.
