A teenager in a stolen car was shot and wounded by an officer early today after he drove toward the officer during a traffic stop, Baltimore County police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m., when a county officer observed a stolen car traveling on Security Boulevard near Whitehead Road.

The officer called for assistance and attempted to stop the car at the intersection of Security Boulevard and Gwynn Oak Avenue in Woodlawn.

As the officers approached the car, they saw two suspects inside and ordered both out of the vehicle. The driver backed into a police car, then drove forward, directly at one of the officers attempting to make the arrest, according to authorities.

In fear for his life, that officer fired into the car, striking the driver, police said. The injured suspect continued to drive and led police on a chase, striking another police car at the intersection of Security Boulevard and Ingleside Avenue.

The driver of the car and a passenger were later arrested in Baltimore City near Melbourne Road. The driver, who is 15 years old, was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment, authorities said.

Police are continuing their investigation.
