An audience of about 9.2 million U.S. viewers got up before dawn Friday to see live coverage of the pope's funeral, according to figures released yesterday by Nielsen Media Research.

While not as large as some analysts had expected, that audience is nevertheless about three times as large as normal for that time of day.

Overall, viewers in 7.2 percent of all homes with television were tuned to the coverage, while viewers in 39 percent of homes with television sets turned on during the hours of 3:30 a.m.-7 a.m. Friday were watching the pope's funeral.

Networks and cable channels that carried live coverage on Friday were: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, WGNC, Telemundo, Azteca America and Univision.
