Mount Hebron 5K race and 1-mile run April 24 to benefit the school

Registration is open for the 13th Mount Hebron Viking Backers' Viking 5K race and 1-mile Fun Run, to start at 9 a.m. April 24.

The event, which is open to everyone, will start at Mount Hebron High School and continue through the Ellicott City neighborhood.

All participants will receive a T-shirt, and the top three race finishers overall will earn awards, as will a variety of runners in age, gender and occupational categories. Fun-run awards are also planned.

Packet pickup and late registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23 and 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on race day.

Advance registration is $17 for the 5K; $12 for the fun run. A $3 surcharge will be applied to registration at the gate.

Proceeds will go to the Viking Backers to help support extracurricular activities at the school - language clubs, planners that are distributed free to students, sports teams and the school's chorus, band and drama programs.

Military Academy Night slated at Howard High

Howard High School will hold a Military Academy Night from 7 to 9 Wednesday.

Representatives from West Point and the Naval, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine academies and from the offices of U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin and Maryland Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski will be on hand to talk with students about the academy nomination and the application process.

Genealogical Society set to meet Wednesday

The Howard County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Janet McFarland will discuss "Searching the Published Pennsylvania Archives."

Master gardeners to answer questions

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, is offering drop-in question-and-answer sessions with master gardeners from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through Sept. 30.

Nursery school planning 21st Spring Fair on April 30

The Mount Hebron Nursery School's parent board invites the community to its 21st Spring Fair, to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 30, rain or shine, at Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church, 2330 Mount Hebron Drive, off Route 99, in Ellicott City.

Tae kwon do and dance performances, pony rides, Moon Bounces, crafts and games with prizes are planned. Food will include pizza, chicken fingers, popcorn and baked goods.

A Mother's Day secret shop and sale of spring plants are also planned. One of the Ravens' mascots - Edgar, Allan or Poe - is expected to be on hand.

Admission is free. Tickets for games and activities can be purchased at the fair.

Navy Seaman Recruit Chris D. Turner, son of Daniel P. Turner of Elkridge, has reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, based in Mayport, Fla. The 2003 graduate of Houston High School, Germantown, Tenn., joined the Navy in June 2004.

Conversation club:

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, offers an English Conversation Club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. The club is intended for adults and teenagers who speak English as a second or third language and who want to practice in a group setting. Elderhostel veterans Ralph and Virginia Adams will share their experiences with the lifelong learning programs at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Miller branch library. Beginning and experienced needleworkers are invited to take their supplies and current projects to the Miller branch at 2 p.m. April 21 to trade tips and socialize while working. Sign language:

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, sponsors a Sign Language Club from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays. The weekly sessions teach teens and adults about sign language and the culture of the hearing-impaired. Registration is required at least a day in advance. 410- 313-1950.

Volunteers sought:

The Patapsco Middle School PTA's spring mulch sale is under way. Bags of pine bark and hardwood mulch will be available Saturday for pickup or free delivery.
