Grace F. Gaffney, 71, organist, state employee

Grace F. Gaffney, a retired state employee and former church musician, died of congestive heart failure Saturday at her Severna Park home. She was 71.

Born Grace Stout in Baltimore and raised on Ellerslie Avenue, she was a 1951 graduate of Eastern High School.

She retired about six years ago as a data processing trainer for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She had earlier been a secretary at the Department of Transportation.

Mrs. Gaffney was a former organist at Grace English Lutheran Church, formerly at Broadway and Gough Street, and later was an organist and choir director for St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park and St. Margaret's Episcopal near Annapolis.

She enjoyed gardening, music and travel.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Severna Park, where she was a member.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Robert D. Gaffney; two sons, Michael T. Gaffney of Severna Park and Evan P. Gaffney of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a daughter, Patricia Gaffney of Stuart, Fla.
