Amtrak train strikes and kills Cecil County boy, 7

April 06, 2005

A 7-year-old boy was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train yesterday about a quarter-mile from his Cecil County home, state police said.

The boy, identified as Matthew Jackson of Northeast, was walking near the tracks about 6:15 p.m. when he was hit by the crew ladder on the train's engine and died on impact, said Trooper Chip Peterson.

The crew of Train No. 173, traveling from Boston to Washington with about 150 passengers, apparently was unaware of the boy being hit, officials said.

Police said two people witnessed the accident and alerted authorities. Evidence of the impact was found in an examination of the engine after the train's arrival at Washington's Union Station, Peterson said.

"There is an underpass for vehicle and foot traffic where the young man was hit," Peterson said. "Apparently, he went over instead of under."
