Tip of the week: Finding a federal job

The official job site for federal jobs is, with a database of about 16,000 public service openings. Those applying are encouraged to submit a resume following federal guidelines that provide more flexibility in showcasing one's work experience and skills compared with previous forms. The resume has replaced the Standard Form 171, although the Optional Application Form 612 still can be used.

When reading federal vacancy announcements, here are some key things to look for:

What is the application deadline?

Is this a full- or part-time position?

What is the salary scale?

How do you apply? Is it a paper or online process?
