Crabs aren't in yet, but Kahler's still has plenty seafood

You like seafood? Then I've got a place for you.

Kahler's Seafood Restaurant and Carryout would be just about perfect overlooking the water somewhere. Instead, it occupies a modest former residence on a busy stretch of Philadelphia Road in Rosedale. But, hey, you can't have everything in this life.

There's a small restaurant and deck upstairs and a carryout counter on the bottom floor. The carryout area shouts neo-crustacean. There are corny crab cartoons on one wall, two crab wind chimes and several other cute crabby items set up around the room. There's also a spiffy wall-mounted video slot machine - for amusement only.

Unfortunately, during our visit in late March, Kahler's had no crabs, disappointing a steady stream of callers.

But, hey, Kahler's had plenty of crab meat and other seafood items, so we placed our usual enormous order. Service was pleasant and reasonably efficient.

We stuck mainly to seafood, with a couple of exceptions. And everything we tried was more than adequate.

Crab soup ($3.95) had the familiar assembly of corn, carrots and shreds of crab meat, in a nice tangy broth.

A back-fin crab fluff ($8) was a puffy, deep-fried, breaded-crab concoction that we all liked. We opted for the deluxe crab cake - a broiled one using jumbo lump meat ($8.95). It was amply sized and indeed had plenty of lump meat. It also had a peppery kick that we liked.

An oyster sandwich ($6.95) featured two enormous fried oysters, which were quite tasty when drenched in cocktail sauce.

We ventured onto land for a big hamburger. At $3.50, this 8-ounce creation was a bargain. And chicken strips ($4.50) fulfilled the needs of our resident chicken-finger taster.

Side orders were all fine, particularly the hush puppies ($3.50), deep-fried, seasoned cornmeal.

Kahler's sometimes has desserts but not the night we visited.

There's plenty of parking at Kahler's, which sits not far inside the Beltway on Philadelphia Road.
