The Baltimore City Department of Transportation today announced that portions of Eutaw and Baltimore streets will be closed Wednesday in preparation for the Miss USA pageant.

Fifty-one contestants arrived in Baltimore last week. The first round of judging begins Wednesday when contestants stage a presentation show featuring swimwear and evening gown competitions at the Hippodrome Theatre, 12 N. Eutaw Street.

Event organizers requested the closures as they anticipate greater activity in the area with production and setup crews.

Eutaw Street between Baltimore and Fayette Streets will be closed to traffic from noon until midnight Wednesday. Traffic also will not be permitted along Baltimore Street from Paca to Eutaw streets.

These street closures will be implemented again from noon until midnight on April 11.

Transportation officials encouraged motorists traveling in the area to use alternate routes.

The following detours are also expected:

Northbound Eutaw Street traffic will be detoured right on Baltimore Street, left on Park Avenue, left on Fayette Street back to Eutaw Street. Southbound Eutaw Street traffic will be detoured right on Fayette Street, left on Green Street, left on Pratt Street back to Eutaw Street. Eastbound Baltimore Street traffic will be detoured left on Paca Street, right on Mulberry Street, right on Cathedral Street back to Baltimore Street.

Miss USA 2005 will be broadcast live from the theater at 9 p.m. Monday on NBC.
