Red Sox vs. Yankees

Best Rivalry

American League East

April 03, 2005|By Peter Schmuck

It's not only major league baseball's top rivalry. It's also the premier rivalry of all American professional sports, and it keeps getting better.

The Red Sox's first world title in 86 years has raised the level of intensity in both Boston and New York, but the Sox will be without two major figures from last year's team. Pedro Martinez has jumped to the Mets and postseason hero Derek Lowe signed with the Dodgers, forcing manager Terry Francona to enter the 2005 season with a reconfigured pitching staff that will be without ace Curt Schilling for at least the first couple of weeks.

The lack of a World Series title since 2000 has raised the stakes in the Big Apple, where the Yankees again will feel immense pressure to prove that $200 million will occasionally buy the big trophy. Breaks your heart, doesn't it? - Peter Schmuck
