Beazer Homes USA Inc. has begun selling new garage townhouses in East Baltimore, marking the first downtown project for the nation's sixth-largest homebuilder.

Beazer's 135 townhouse properties in Albemarle Square, part of the redevelopment of the former Flag House Courts public housing project a block from Little Italy, will sell from $177,990 to the high $300,000s.

Beazer purchased the lots from the city housing authority in September and began building in February. The builder has 26 homes under contract. It expects to complete the project in about two years. The community also includes 202 affordable housing units.

The market-rate townhouses will include a three-story, 1,755-square-foot model, starting at $244,990. Other properties will include four-story townhouses divided into two-story units. Each lower unit sells for $177,990 and has 1,182 square feet.
