Patterson's Deshawn Barrett, All-Metro Wrestler of the Year, scored first-period pins yesterday over Texas' William Fortner and Missouri's Frank Herbert in the National High School Coaches Association Senior Nationals Championship at Public Hall in Cleveland.

Barrett (38-0, 33 pins) will face Ohio's Mark Sexton today. A victory would likely earn the 215-pound Baltimorean a quarterfinal bout against Jared Rosholt (188-4 career), the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler at the weight and four-time Oklahoma champ.

A win over Rosholt would give Barrett All-American status as one of the top eight in his weight class.

Barrett is trying to become Maryland's first national champ since McDonogh's J.R. Plienis in 1996 and Baltimore City's first since Southwestern's Walter Reed in 1991, the city's only All-American. Other area national champs were Archbishop Curley's Gene Curran (1990) and Northeast's Marty Kusick (1995).
