O's rotation takes spin with Ponson at No. 4

Mazzilli: Off-field issues not a factor in decision

Unable to hold a rotation spot in the past, Bauer could earn another chance. He vented at his locker last summer after being sent down for a third time, saying the team didn't want him anymore. The Orioles gave him two starts in September, and he blanked the Toronto Blue Jays over six innings in the second game of a doubleheader.

"What I did last year, I think, opened a few eyes at the end of the year. And I've pitched pretty good down here," Bauer said. "It's the same old song and dance for me. I'm just going to try to help the team win whatever best way possible, and hopefully it is a starting spot because I feel like I'm a little better suited for that, especially now in my career."

If the Orioles decide to keep nonroster reliever Jay Witasick, they could risk losing Todd Williams, who's also out of minor league options and would have to pass through waivers before being sent down. Williams, bothered by flulike symptoms, hasn't given up an earned run in six innings.
