School's heart association fund-raiser is April 7

Elkridge Landing Middle School's "Jump & Hoops for Heart," scheduled for April 7, will raise money for the American Heart Association.

Students, parents and staff members, who will receive pledge envelopes, are encouraged to participate.

In "Hoops for Heart," a basketball competition, students and staff members form teams of three and compete in a grade-level tournament. "Jump for Heart" will include individual and team jump-rope competitions and hula-hoop contests.

The children will also work on health-related activities in the classroom.

Needleworkers invited to Miller branch library

Beginning and experienced needleworkers are invited to take their supplies and current projects to the Miller branch library at 2 p.m. April 7 and 21 to trade tips and socialize while working.

Elderhostel veterans Ralph and Virginia Adams will share their experiences with the lifelong learning programs at 1:30 p.m. April 14 at the Miller branch.

Registration is encouraged and is to begin two weeks before each program.

Patapsco Middle School's mulch pickup is April 16

The Patapsco Middle School PTA's spring mulch sale is under way.

Bags of pine bark and hardwood mulch will be available April 16 for pickup or free delivery. The deadline to order has passed, but volunteers with trucks are needed to help deliver the mulch.

Ballet, tap-dance classes scheduled for seniors

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor ballet and tap-dance classes for seniors ages 55 and older.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn basic ballet and tap steps and to develop coordination, body awareness, balance, rhythm and love of dance. Ballet and tap shoes are required.

The classes will be held from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, starting this week, at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

The cost is $18 for the six-week series.

Graduates:

Air Force Airman Christopher S. Worden, son of Carol Bonnell of Ellicott City, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is a 2003 graduate of Mount Hebron High School.
