Orchard management and pruning to be discussed

The Howard County Conservancy and the Maryland Cooperative Extension -- Howard County will sponsor a program on orchard management and pruning from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the conservancy, 10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock.

Gardening specialist Jon Traunfeld will talk about managing fruit trees and demonstrate pruning practices.

Everyone is welcome. Participants should meet at the house on the conservancy property at 10 a.m. Most of the program will be outdoors; take or wear boots.

Glenwood library offering Writers' Circle on April 21

The Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, will offer a Writers' Circle, for aspiring authors who want to share their original writing with other writers, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 21.

The group will offer feedback and support.

Master gardeners will discuss do-it-yourself tricks useful in growing plants from seed at 7 p.m. April 12 at the library.

Registration is encouraged.

Marriotts Ridge High PTSA nominees sought

The Marriotts Ridge High School PTSA nominating committee is accepting nominations for PTSA president, first vice president, second vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, treasurer, and two PTA Council representatives.

Anyone interested in one of these positions should call Cindy Haller, 410-489-7366, by April 4.

Teacher and student representative positions will be filled later.

The proposed bylaws for the school's PTSA are available for review in the front office of schools sending students to Marriotts Ridge, which is to open in August.

Church youth group plans fund-raiser April 30

The Extreme Teens Youth Group of Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, 915 East Watersville Road, Mount Airy, will hold a Spaghetti Dinner and Spring Flower Sale to raise money for a Camp Hope trip this summer.

The event, which includes a silent auction and bake table and the opportunity to purchase Camp Hope "stock," will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 30 at the church.

Camp Hope, a ministry of the United Methodist Church, sends Christian youth work teams to Allegany County, Md., to rehabilitate housing for low-income residents.

The cost for dinner is $6; $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Those to age 6 eat free.

Basket bingo: Lisbon Volunteer Fire Company Inc., 1330 Woodbine Road, will sponsor a basket bingo at 7 p.m. Friday with filled Longaberger baskets, pottery and wrought-iron items filled with prizes. Doors and the kitchen will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and include 20 games and door prizes. Tickets bought in advance include an additional free game. Summer camps: Howard County Conservancy will offer summer nature camps for children ages 8 to 12 from July 11 to Aug. 19. The camps will be held at the conservancy's 232-acre nature reserve, 10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock. Camps will run in one-week segments from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
