Erik Bedard shut down the Red Sox for six innings and a driving rainstorm did the rest, as the Orioles beat Boston, 6-1, in six-plus innings yesterday.
Bedard, the 26-year-old left-hander who entered the exhibition season projected as the No. 3 starter, continued his March mastery with a tremendous performance against a Red Sox lineup that only was missing one starter -- outfielder Trot Nixon.
Bedard didn't allow a runner to second base until the fourth inning, when Manny Ramirez singled with two outs and David Ortiz drove him home with a double.
Bedard (3-0) allowed no other runs and just five hits in six innings, dropping his spring ERA to 2.11. He walked none and struck out three.
The Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the third when Miguel Tejada hit his first homer. It was just his second and third RBIs this spring.
David Wells allowed four more runs in the sixth, including Luis Matos' three-run double. Heavy rain halted the game in the top of the seventh.
Luis Matos: He had just one hit Wednesday, but it was a three-run double in the sixth. Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said he was more impressed with Matos' patience during the at-bat than the result.
B.J. Surhoff: He's 40 and projected as a reserve, but he doesn't quit hustling. He made a charging catch on a liner in the fifth and beat out a potential double play in the sixth that kept a rally alive.
Miguel Tejada: Sort of. It took him 13 games, but Tejada finally homered this spring. He hit a line-drive shot to left to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Melvin Mora: At least for a day. Mora was the only Orioles starter not to get a hit against Boston's Opening Day starter, David Wells.
Left fielder Larry Bigbie missed his second game with a back spasm. ... Outfielder Midre Cummings, a non-roster invitee, will be sidelined four to six weeks with a broken right ring finger. ... Reliever Todd Williams didn't make the trip because of the flu. ... First baseman Jay Gibbons made his first start since March 12 and had one hit in three at-bats. He had been sidelined with pneumonia.
