Happy state of affairs

Celebrate the founding of the state at the "Maryland Day Celebration" today at the Maryland Historical Society. While tomorrow officially marks the 371st anniversary of the landing of English settlers on St. Clement's Island, today visitors to the museum can hear songs from the Maryland Army National Guard Band, watch a presentation honoring the Marylander of the Year, enjoy tours, refreshments and more. The Maryland Historical Society and the Maryland Colonial Society co-sponsor the event.

`Spring Break'

Kids can take a "Spring Break" at Port Discovery, tomorrow through April 2. Visitors can choose from an array of arts, crafts and interactive activities and programs. From 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through April 1, ages 4 and up can make their own "Soap on a Rope." From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, visitors can hear "Doggie Tales," a program of canine stories, and visit with a dog from the Chesapeake Search and Rescue Dog Association. At 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, the Kindersinger presents "Songs From Around the World" for all ages. And at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. April 2, those ages 2 and up can participate in the cooking class "Tastin' With Jason."

"Spring Break" events take place at Port Discovery, the Children's Museum in Baltimore, 35 Market Place. Events are free with admission, which is $11; $8.50 for ages 3-12; younger than age 3, free. Call 410-727-8120 or 410-864- 2678 or visit www.portdiscovery. org.

Ladew story time

Children ages 2 to 4, accompanied by an adult, can enjoy springtime stories and activities at the "Spring Has Sprung" program at Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton today. This is the final "Nature Stories and Crafts" event of the winter season. More programs will be offered in late spring and summer. Today's stories will be offered in two sessions.

"Spring Has Sprung" takes place at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. today at Ladew Topiary Gardens, 3535 Jarrettsville Pike, Monkton. $5 per session. Reservations required. Call 410-557-9466.
