Performer of the Year

Alison Smith, Atholton

After winning the Class 2A state crown in cross country to earn the county Runner of the Year award last fall, Smith swept the 1,600 at the county (5 minutes, 22.1 seconds), Class 2A-1A East regional (5:27.63) and state (5:15.62) meets.

After taking the 3,200 (11:45.0) at the county championships, the sophomore took the 800 at the region (2:24.9) and the state (2:22.74) meets.

She nearly broke the 5-minute ceiling in the mile, clocking in at 5:00.12 for fourth place at the New Balance Games.

Coach of the Year

Brian Funk, Atholton

Several observers had picked the Raiders as a dark-horse candidate for the county championship.

Funk and Atholton turned that potential into victory, as the 1,600-relay squad posted a county-record time in the event to give the Raiders their first county title in school history.

Atholton also scored runner-up finishes at the Class 2A-1A East regional and state meets - also firsts in school history.
