Merritt club offering children's swim lessons

Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg will hold swimming lessons for children 6 months through 14 years old.

Day and evening classes are available and are based on Red Cross guidelines.

The club also is accepting registration for the Sunday volleyball league that starts in April.

Firefighters recruit using `fantasy weekend' in April

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department will conclude its six-month "Who Will Answer the Call" membership recruitment campaign with a "Firefighter Fantasy Weekend" April 8-10, in which area residents can experience the firefighting lifestyle.

Participants will be issued gear and ride along on emergency calls, receiving guidance and explanation from seasoned firefighters.

"Recruits" will train with Sykesville firefighters at the county training center in Westminster. There they'll learn search and rescue and how to use fire extinguishers; undergo hose drills; and experience conditions inside a burning building, auto extrication and car fires.

Certification in adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation will be available.

Participants will sample firehouse cuisine and can spend Saturday night at the firehouse. A luncheon Sunday afternoon for participants and their families will conclude the program.

Theater troupe begins registration for camp

The Tree of Life Theatre Troupe is taking registration for summer camp for ages 6 to adult.

Students will learn basic or advanced acting skills, as well as set design and lighting.

The camp will be held June 20 to July 1 at the Freedom Optimist Hall on Route 32. Camp will end with a cabaret performance at 7 p.m. July 1.

The cost is $200; $175 for additional family members. A directing-only class is $50 if registered with an acting class.

Story times, music, habitat program offered by library

Eldersburg branch library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, is offering:

"Snugglebugs at Fairhaven" at 10 a.m. Tuesday and March 29 for children to age 2 with an adult (siblings are welcome). The story time and play group will be held at Fairhaven Assisted Living Center in Sykesville and will include the residents. Registration is required.

"KidWorks Presents: The Bunny Hop " at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for all ages (children 3 and younger with an adult). The program will feature stories, music and activities about rabbits.

"Building a Backyard Habitat" at 7 p.m. March 31 for adults. Master wildlife habitat naturalist Cathy Gilleland will show slides and discuss how to entice birds, butterflies and other wildlife to your yard using plants and other materials.

Mothers project: Mothers & More will meet from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road, near Eldersburg. They will make Easter baskets for needy children. 410-795-0633.

St. James' announces Easter services

St. James' Episcopal Church will hold Palm Sunday worship at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. today.

Maundy Thursday worship with foot washing will be at 7 p.m.

The church will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Good Friday for those wishing to pray. A Holy Eucharist service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.

An Easter vigil with holy baptism and Eucharist will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Easter Sunday worship will begin with a sunrise prayer and music service at 6:30 a.m. at the church's property east of North Main Street and south of Dorseytown. Easter Eucharist services will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. March 27.

Beth Shalom to hold Purim service Thursday

Beth Shalom Congregation of Carroll County, 2020 Liberty Road, Taylorsville, will hold a Purim service at 7:15 p.m. Thursday and a Shabbat service at 8 p.m. Friday.

Shabbat services are held at 8 p.m. every Friday. On the first Shabbat of each month, two early services are offered: a Tot Shabbat at 6 p.m. for young children and their families, and a Kabbalat Shabbat/Ma'ariv service at 6:30 p.m.

Rabbi Jay Goldstein of Beth Israel in Owings Mills will speak on "Jewish Humor" at 10:45 a.m. March 27. Reservations are requested.

Beth Shalom will hold its Superduper Bingo Evening on April 2 at the synagogue. Doors open and food will be served at 7 p.m. Bingo starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
