THE QUESTION: HOW MANY SNOW DAYS DO STUDENTS IN ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY HAVE LEFT?

THE ANSWER: None.

Anne Arundel public schools have closed because of inclement weather four times so far during the 2004-2005 school year, using up all the days built into the school calendar.

If the rest of March ends up being more lion than lamb, students will have to give up April 22, a scheduled "spring vacation" day. If any additional closings occur, school officials will have to add days to the end of the school year -- currently June 16.

Each year, the school system convenes a calendar committee of district officials, employee union representatives and students to balance state requirements for 180 days of instruction and union contracts with cultural and religious obligations, as well as athletic schedules and testing.

The committee surveys parents and employees annually to determine their preferences about the school calendar, said volunteer coordinator Teresa Tudor.
