Inmate on road crew finds 9 mm handgun, ammunition

A Baltimore County Detention Center inmate found a handgun yesterday while working on a road cleanup crew, state police said.

The inmate, who was not identified, found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun and several rounds of ammunition around 10 a.m. in a grassy area in the 1700 block of Belmont Avenue near a state police facility in Woodlawn, said Sgt. Thornnie Rouse, a state police spokesman. The gun had a round jammed in its chamber and could not have been fired by anyone who found it, Rouse said.

The gun has not been reported stolen, Rouse said. He added that police will try to track down the gun's owner and investigate whether the gun might have been used in a crime. - Anica Butler
