For Maryland, others, it's all about `nitty-gritty'

March 10, 2005|By Paul McMullen | Paul McMullen,SUN STAFF

It's Sunday in Indianapolis, and the Division I men's basketball committee must decide who gets the last of the 33 at-large invitations to the NCAA tournament.

Chairman Bob Bowlsby calls for the "nitty-gritty" on the potential candidates, a list of 13 quantitative measurements that could decide who's in and who's out.

Maryland could provide the biggest paradox. The Terps are 2-6 against teams ranked 51 through 100 in the ratings percentage index (RPI), but 3-4 against the top 50, thanks to their sweep of Duke.

West Virginia will win admirers for its 6-5 road record and a late-season surge, but is its RPI high enough? North Carolina State brings a 5-6 road record, but the Wolfpack may be doomed by its nonconference RPI.

Here's the "nitty-gritty" that the NCAA will consider for a sampling of "bubble" teams. Not available is one factor: the teams' records against "board" teams - that is, other teams under consideration.

Data are through Tuesday's games, and use the replica posted online by Ken Pomeroy. That replica is not exact, as Pomeroy has the Big East rated fourth among conferences, while the NCAA has it third.
