THE ISSUE: SHOULD ROUTE 32 BE WIDER?

PRO: The State Highway Administration has proposed widening Route 32 from Clarksville north to Interstate 70. The $200 million project is needed to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion on the busiest stretch of two-lane road in Maryland, most state and local officials say.

CON: The rate of fatal crashes and overall accidents on Route 32 is slightly below average for such a busy road. It can be made safer without the cost and delay involved in widening it, contend Fox Hall and Kings Grant residents opposing it. Among their suggestions: lower the speed limit, enforce it and divert truck traffic elsewhere.
