Sideways swept the 20th annual Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.

The film about wine and relationships won six awards including: feature, director (Alexander Payne), male lead (Paul Giamatti), supporting male (Thomas Haden Church), supporting female (Virginia Madsen) and screenplay (Payne and Jim Taylor).

The Spirits typically are awarded to films made by studios outside Hollywood's mainstream that push the cinematic envelope.

Other winners included Oscar-nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno (female lead, for Maria Full of Grace) and Spain's The Sea Inside (foreign film).

Another sweep also occurred Saturday, when Catwoman earned four Razzie awards for cinematic malfeasance. The film was named the worst movie of 2004, and star Halle Berry, director Pitof and four screenwriters also were singled out.

President Bush "won" a Worst Actor Razzie for his appearance in Fahrenheit 9/11.

Berry, who won a Best Actress Oscar three years ago, actually showed up at Hollywood's Ivar Theatre to accept her award.

"Next time I do a movie, if I get a chance to do another movie," Berry said to her agent, who accompanied her onstage, "maybe we should read the script first."
