Merritt Athletic Club to offer Red Cross lifeguard course

Merritt Athletic Club of Eldersburg will offer a Red Cross lifeguard course from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays March 7 to April 11.

The swim test for the class will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Merritt Youth Swim Team for ages 6 to 16 runs from March through April. Monthly enrollment is accepted. Practices are held three to four times a week.

Hospital to present nutrition talk March 7

Carroll Hospital Center will present a Heart of the Matter program from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 7 in the Women's Place.

Alison Manger Weikel, dietitian, will discuss "The Lowdown on Good Nutrition in a Low Carb vs. Low Fat World."

The program is free.

Appearance workshop set for female cancer patients

The American Cancer Society will offer a "Look Good ... Feel Better" workshop for female cancer patients from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 7 at Carroll Hospital Center's Women's Place.

The free program is open to women who are learning to cope with appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

Topics will include make-up techniques, hair care, wig styles and accessories.

Registration is required. The Women's Place is at 291 Stoner Ave.

Support program to focus on prostate cancer

The American Cancer Society and Carroll Hospital Center will offer a "Man to Man" prostate cancer education and support program from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 9 in the hospital's Learning Center.

The program is a forum for men to learn about diagnosis and treatment options for prostate cancer in a comfortable and confidential environment.

Family members are welcome. Registration is recommended.

Largest Baby Shower scheduled for April 2

Maryland's Largest Baby Shower in Carroll County will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 2 at Wilhelm Ltd. caterers on Route 140.

The baby shower is sponsored by the Carroll County Health Department and other health and social services organizations to promote healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.

The program includes speaker presentations and educational exhibits and materials. Guest speakers will include Maryland first lady Kendel S. Ehrlich and Dr. Robert Wack, chief of pediatrics at Carroll Hospital Center, who will discuss "Infant Care and Development."

The shower is free to pregnant women. There will be a $12 charge for guests.

Registration deadline is March 18.

Depression group: DRADA, Depression and Related Affective Disorders Association, offers a mutual-help support group for persons suffering from depression and bipolar illness. A group will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church on Johnsville Road, Eldersburg. 410-781-6838.

Heroin Group: Heroin Action Coalition of Carroll County will hold a support group meeting from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the community room of Carrolltown Center, Liberty Road, Eldersburg. Those seeking help or information and those dealing with an addict are welcome. 410-239-3350.
