Seeing red - and loving it - at the Heart Ball

Some 550 B-more folks arrived at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel last weekend and immediately saw red. Maybe that's because they had come to the American Heart Association's Heart Ball, and red was the theme of the night. The color draped over tables, backdrops and even took the shape of big heart balloons scattered around the dance floor, but it also decorated many of the guests, starting with the evening's co-chairs. Greg Jarosinski sported a spiffy textured claret silk vest and tie with his tux, while wife Charlotte was a standout in ruby red. She wore a dishy layered chiffon strapless gown by Gilar. Her evening bag defined the evening - in deep red lizard with a rhinestone heart clasp, made by local designer Sheri Wolf. Daughters Leigh and Kristen Ryan and son Steve continued the motif in red dresses and tie.

Meanwhile, Baltimore AHA board Chairman John Tolmie, also decked out in a carmine tie, pointed out wife Lynn's unique accessory, a crimson cast on her left leg. She had recently undergone foot surgery and specifically chose the new color just for the shindig that night.

Wouldn't you know, the dinner started and ended on rosy notes. The first course was a salad that included red endive and dried cranberries. And dessert was a red velvet marquee with white chocolate chip mousse and raspberry ganache. Oh, and did we mention the evening's signature drink? The "D2" - raspberry vodka, sour mix, cranberry juice and a splash of grenadine.

The art party

Meanwhile, another grand celebration was going on over at the Ambassador Dining Room, in honor of Tommy Segal's birthday. Wife Clair Zamoiski-Segal invited some 60 friends and family to fete the art dealer's 65th. First, there was the Indian feast and then a dessert tailor-made for Tommy, a Patisserie Poupon cake copy of Jasper John's Corpse and Mirror. It's Tommy and Clair's favorite Johns print, which they have hanging in their living room. Tommy happily chatted up the crowd, proudly introducing his son Jonathan Segal, 34, a Hollywood writer/director/producer who has just finished his latest flick. The Last Run stars Fred Savage and Amy Adams.

A better fit

Up at 1200 N. Charles St., you may have noticed a change of country. What was the Tampico Mexican Grill morphed into Limoges Gourmet Bistro this week. Owner Mahmood Karzai said the Mexican theme just wasn't a good fit for the Meyerhoff and Lyric-going crowd. After visiting friends Jeanne and Manuel Garcia-Lomas at their home in France, Mahmood enlisted their help and that of Jeanne's restaurateur brother Jose Lomas in setting up Limoges. Mahmood says the layout is the same, but the Mexican tile and decor are gone, replaced by deep cherry accents and draperies, to give the place a warmer bistro feel.

If the menu is any indication, then this bistro is on the southern coast of France, where there's a bit of Basque and Spanish influence. Appetizers include mussels steamed in white wine with a saffron and chorizo broth ($7.95) and stuffed Spanish sweet peppers with Maryland crab, aioli and baby lettuces ($9.95). Entrees include coquilles St. Jacques, Brittany-style scallops with clams and snow peas in a green peppercorn saffron broth ($19.95), along with Cazuela de Merlu, a Basque-style filet of hake in a casserole with peas and white asparagus ($18.95). There's boeuf Bourguignon, red wine-braised round of beef with fine herbs, mushrooms and potatoes ($18.95), and filet d'Agneau, roasted lamb loin with garlic and thyme, served with comfit of peppers and onions and sauce Basque ($22.95).

Limoges Gourmet Bistro, 410-837-9999, is open for dinner only - 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 5 p.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
