Mike Kessler

Owings Mills, wrestling

The 152-pound senior avenged two losses to Kenwood's defending 4A-3A state champ Mason Krumholtz by defeating Krumholtz, 7-2, in last weekend's Baltimore County tournament. In ending Krumholtz's 65-match winning streak, Kessler improved to 29-0 this season and 139-9 for his career, and he led the Eagles to their fourth straight team title and ninth overall. It was his second county title.

Kessler also has beaten two-time private schools state champ Bryn Holmes of McDonogh and private schools champ Don Lozzi of Germantown Academy. This weekend, Kessler goes after his fourth Class 2A-1A North region title.

That would tie him with older brothers, Gregg, 30, and Steve, 26, winners of three and four state titles, respectively. Kessler's oldest brother, Kevin, 34, also won a state title. Mike is in search of his first state championship, having placed fifth, third and second in the past three seasons.

Nicole Woody

Arundel, wrestling

The 103-pound freshman became the first female wrestler to place in the top three of last weekend's Anne Arundel County tournament, an effort that also makes her Maryland's first female to qualify for a regional tournament. If she places in the top four of next weekend's 4A-3A East region event, Woody would become the first Maryland female to qualify for the state tournament.

Woody blanked Annapolis' John Graham, 8-0, for third place. She also defeated Broadneck's Josh Taber, 13-4, and Matt Tomitz of South River, 4-3. Woody lost to Chesapeake-Anne Arundel's Vincent Scardina, 6-3, after having led 3-1.

Woody improved to 6-1 on varsity and 23-2 counting junior varsity. Last month, Woody competed with the women's Olympic and world team members in Russia, with an eye toward making the 2008 Olympic team.
