Wine Of The Week

February 23, 2005|By Michael Dresser

2004 Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough ($9). This penetrating, fruity, fresh New Zealand sauvignon blanc is an exquisite value and a wine that will only become more useful in the warmer months ahead. Its lively flavors of gooseberry, juniper, melon, pears, minerals and smoke match those of wines selling for double its price. New Zealand sauvignon blanc can be an acquired taste, but this one is less extreme than some of the better-known labels. Serve it with fresh seafood or spicy cuisines such as Thai and Vietnamese. The only improvement I'd suggest is a screw cap to eliminate the risk of cork taint.
