ISSUE: Should Merriweather Post Pavilion be enclosed?

PRO: The owners of Columbia's Merriweather Post Pavilion are offering the venerable concert venue for sale. General Growth Properties, which acquired Merriweather when it bought the Rouse Co., says it will sell Merriweather only to a buyer who will turn the outdoor amphitheater into a smaller indoor venue that could be used all year. Some believe enclosing it would make Merriweather more accessible for community and classical music events.

CON: Howard County was granted exclusive buying rights by the Rouse Co. and a citizen panel is poised to make a recommendation. But the panel has already said it believes Merriweather can't turn a profit unless it remains an open-air amphitheater attracting large pop concerts. Many die-hard concert fans also oppose enclosing Merriweather.
