Southwestern boys stop Mervo

No. 4 Southwestern (20-3) beat host Mervo in boys basketball yesterday, 75-63, and tuned up for selection Sunday - the public high school playoff brackets, which will be announced tomorrow.

Jamal Barney, the area's leading scorer at 24.9 points a game, scored 15 points to lead Southwestern.

Senior Antwon Lawrence led Mervo (16-6) with 17 points.

No. 11 Old Mill 54, Meade 49: Guard Alex Buchholz had 12 points and made a school-record nine assists as the Patriots defeated visiting Meade.

To support Buchholz's effort, Shane Rickmon had 14 points and Andrew Engel had 12.

Old Mill (19-3) held off a late Mustangs rally to get the win.

Al Robinson had 17 points for Meade.

Girls

No. 2 Western 68, Poly 35: Lavon Woods scored 20 points and Whitney Cunningham added 19 to lead the visiting Doves (19-3).

Brittany Lonesome had 15 points for the Engineers.

No. 10 Severna Park 58, Broadneck 49: Down by two points at halftime, the Falcons (17-3) scored 39 of their 58 points in the second half to win.

The Falcons were led by seniors Laura Moore and Jen Wiley, who scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Bruin Tiera Brown scored a game-high 20 points for the Bruins.
