Boston University's ability to get to the free-throw line and UMBC's inability to get there proved to be the difference in last night's America East contest at the RAC Arena.

Two long scoring droughts by UMBC were also decisive.

The Retrievers, who lost their season-high fourth straight game, 61-51, were 2-for-7 at the free-throw line, while Boston was 12-for-23. Boston was called for 10 personal fouls and UMBC for 17.

"It was a physical game and it was tough for us not to get the calls," said UMBC center Andrew Feeley, who played one of his best games this season, scoring a game-high 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Boston (17-5 overall, 10-2 America East), won its sixth straight game to remain in second place in America East behind Vermont.

As they have most of the season, the Retrievers (9-13, 4-9) dug themselves a first-half hole and then rallied strongly in the second half.

They shot only 24.1 percent (7-for-29) in the first half, and had only two points from their guards that half. Boston put together a 16-0 run, as UMBC went almost six minutes without scoring and fell behind 30-12. The Retrievers trailed 34-16 at halftime.

Boston ranks fourth in the nation and first in America East in scoring defense, giving up only 55.8 points per game.

"Our team plays good defense and made UMBC work hard," said Boston coach Dennis Wolff. "We knew they'd play better in the second half, but we were casual at the start of the half."

UMBC scored the first nine points of the second half to cut the lead to 34-25, but Boston fought back with a balanced inside-outside offense and the scoring of Rashad Bell (11 points), Shaun Wynn (13 points) and Chaz Carr (12 points).

The closest UMBC got was 53-46 with 7:22 to play, but the Retrievers didn't score again until 1:12 remained.

The win was the fifth straight for Boston over UMBC, and the Terriers hold a 7-1 series edge.
