George Herman, 85, a longtime political reporter for CBS News and longest-serving moderator of its Sunday talk show, Face the Nation, died of heart failure yesterday in Washington.

Mr. Herman joined CBS as a radio newswriter in 1944, and began his career in political reporting as White House correspondent in the early 1950s. He was host of Face the Nation from 1969 to 1983, the longest tenure in its 50-year history.
