A 38-year-old man was fatally shot early yesterday near Gwynns Falls Park, becoming Baltimore's 38th homicide victim this year, city police said.

Police also reported yesterday the death over the weekend of a man shot Thursday in the 2900 block of Allendale Road in West Baltimore.

In yesterday's shooting, police responded to a report of a shooting at 4:28 a.m. at Rosedale Street and Edmondson Avenue. They found a man lying in the street nearby in the 900 block of Ellicott Driveway, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.

The man, identified as Larry Freddie Jackson, 38, of the 600 block of Linnard St., was pronounced dead a few minutes later at the scene, police said.

In the weekend death, police responded at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday to a shooting in the 3700 block of Woodhaven Ave., and then received a second call for a man lying in a driveway in the 2900 block of Allendale, Monroe said.

Keith Smith, 24, of the 3300 block of Bateman Ave. was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he died Saturday afternoon, Monroe said.

Police have not arrested anyone in connection with either shooting, Monroe said.

The two men are the 37th and 38th homicide victims in 2005. There were 29 killings in Baltimore during the same period in 2004.
