Youth leadership, service program taking applications

Leadership U, a youth leadership and community service program sponsored by Leadership Howard County, is accepting applications from high school sophomores for its 10th class.

The four-month program prepares students to be effective leaders by exploring the inner workings of the county and involving them in a team service project.

Information sessions will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway.

Leadership U begins July 31 and includes a one-week interactive training experience to teach leadership and team-building skills and expose students to critical issues facing the Howard County community.

The program, which continues through the fall semester, includes a "Shadow Day," when students will spend the day with business or community leaders.

Tuition is $400; financial aid is available. Applications, available in high school guidance offices and at www.leadership, are due by March 11.

College offering help with financial aid forms

Howard Community College's Financial Aid Services will offer free, hands-on assistance to students and parents in filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

"The Financial Aid Spotlight" will be held in Room 100 of the college's Instructional Lab Building, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Those who attend should bring their Social Security card, applicable tax forms, 2004 federal income tax return and all relevant financial documents requested on the FAFSA application Web site (www.FAFSA.ed. gov).

Summer Camp Expo to be held Sunday

Kahler Hall will be the host for its annual Camp Expo for day and residential summer camps from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kahler Hall, 5440 Old Tucker Row, Columbia.

Admission is free. Strollers are not allowed.

HCC plans session tonight for high school students

Howard Community College will hold high school nights for prospective students and their parents at 7 p.m. today and Feb. 17 in Room 100 of the Instructional Lab Building. The snow date is Feb. 22.

The events are designed to help graduating seniors prepare for college.

Performance poetry workshop set tonight

High school students interested in writing, drama, performance poetry, politics, public speaking and spoken rap are invited to participate in a free 10-week performance poetry workshop series, "The Art of the Spoken Word."

The first workshop will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the Faulkner Ridge Center in Columbia.

Board of Education is to meet tomorrow

The Howard County Board of Education is to meet in closed session at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

At 4 p.m. tomorrow, the board will begin the afternoon session of its regularly scheduled meeting in the boardroom. The afternoon session, and an evening session, which is to start at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Sign-up in advance is preferred.
