1 killed, 2 injured in crash with SUV

February 04, 2005|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A woman was killed and two other people were injured yesterday evening when a sport utility vehicle being driven south on a section of North Charles Street that had been permanently closed 11 hours earlier crashed into four other vehicles.

Police said barricades were in place indicating that the traffic lane near the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus - formerly used by southbound traffic - had been closed.

Police said the SUV was first seen in the closed lane in the 3100 block of N. Charles St. about 6 p.m., and was still heading south into the path of one-way traffic when it crossed 28th Street and struck the other vehicles at the intersection.

The names of the woman driving the SUV, a husband and wife who were injured, and the lone fatality - who police said was pronounced dead at Maryland Shock Trauma Center - were not released last night.
