Hearing scheduled on new memorial for King in county

Ideas for a new county memorial to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be discussed during a public hearing at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 14 in the Student Union at Anne Arundel Community College, 101 College Parkway, Arnold.

Carl O. Snowden, the county's intergovernmental relations officer, noted that the county has one small bronze plaque honoring King on the State House grounds.

Snowden said the proposed memorial cannot take the place or name of an existing memorial. The final selection of a site will be chosen from public comments or letters.

Written suggestions may be sent before the Feb. 14 meeting to the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee, P.O. Box 371, Annapolis 21404.

Gambrills man, 21, dies after single-car accident

A Gambrills man was killed early yesterday after being thrown from his car in a single-vehicle accident on Clark Station Road in Severn, Anne Arundel County police said.

Craig Allen Sutton, 21, of the 2400 block of Red Fall Court was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center about 1:50 a.m., police said. He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to a police news release.

Sutton was traveling north on Clark Station Road when his Ford Taurus veered off the road. The vehicle went through a drainage ditch and struck a fence before overturning and stopping on a grassy strip near Hawaii Avenue, police said.

Excessive speed was a factor, police said. An investigation is continuing.
