Ex-court worker sentenced for theft

SALISBURY - The former jury commissioner for the Wicomico County Circuit Court was sentenced there yesterday to serve 18 months in prison for stealing more than $143,000 from her office's bank account, the state attorney general's office announced.

Gay E. Hommel, 41, jury commissioner from 1989 until her thefts were discovered in 2003, was given a five-year term. But retired Caroline Circuit Judge J. Owen Wise - brought in to hear the case - suspended all but 18 months, noting that she had made restitution since pleading guilty in December.

According to a statement facts in the case, Hommel had sole signature authority over the jury commissioner's bank account and stole from it.
