Motorists are urged to avoid the intersection of Lombard and Light streets in downtown Baltimore after a water main broke in the area this afternoon, city officials said.

According to the Department of Transportation, although the intersection remains open to traffic, several lanes are closed and various restrictions will be implemented throughout the afternoon while utility work is completed.

Commuters are advised to use westbound Fayette Street to either Hopkins Place or Greene Street as an alternate route.

City officials said water service to nearby businesses should not be interrupted.
